The Seafarer
by Conor McPherson
Jan. 26 to Feb. 18, 2012
Conor McPherson, who brought us The Weir, St. Nicholas and Shining City, has a stunning ability to remind us that logic and reason are but weak weapons against the myth and magic that permeate our lives.
It's Christmas Eve, and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, aging brother who's recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house, too, hoping to play some cards. But with the arrival of a stranger from the past, the stakes begin to rise mercilessly. Sharky may be playing for his very soul.
This is an incredibly beautiful and rewarding story of redemption that may put people off initially, because who wants to watch a bunch of alcoholic losers celebrating Christmas? The answer is, you do. If these people can be redeemed, then maybe... just maybe... there may be hope for you, too.
"…dark and enthralling Christmas fable of despair and redemption… tingles with the author's acute and authentic sense of what is knowable and unknowable in life…THE SEAFARER may just be the pick-me-up play of the season." – NY Times
WARNING: Real. Live. Theater.
Definitely Irish - Not recommended for those who would never consider travelling to Ireland for fear of being offended by the culture's famous flair for creative use of language, especially insults and cursing.
