The Sensational Adventures of David and Brian Go to Florida for More Sins of the Mother
by Scot Whitney
Part II
I talked to David on the phone after the first readthrough and he was feeling pretty good about how things had gone. He told a little story about an interesting moment. Brian and David have done the show before, and the actor playing Douggie (Francisco Solorzano) played the role in Gloucester, so the only actor in the group who is new to the show is Gordon McConnell, playing Bobby. The first ten minutes of the play is all between Bobby and Douggie. This segment went fine. Then Dubbah and Frankie (Brian and David) enter with coffee and donuts. At this point in the readthrough David and Brian just sort of took off with the long set of rapid exchanges with Douggie. When the scene finally shifted to include more of the character of Bobby, Gordon paused, placed both of his palms carefully on the table and said, "Well, I guess we're really going to do this." And on they went with a new velocity and ferocity. "It was kind of cool," said David.
Left to right: Brian Claudio Smith as Frankie/Philly; Francisco Solorzano as Douggie; Israel Horovitz, playwright and director; David Nail as Dubbah; Gordon McCollen as Bobby
I asked David what kind of rehearsal schedule they're keeping. "Normally they rehearse days, but Israel has requested 4-10pm, so he can have his days for, you know, running, golf, that kind of thing. Which is great! That means we can spend our days at the beach!"
"This place is unbelievable, man. It's unbelievable!" says David. "They took us to the scene shop today. It's like they're building a &^$% movie set!"
