On the Road with the Band of Heathens

Band of Heathens with Guy Forsyth African Children's ChoirWhen we talked to Seth recently, he was just coming off a two week tour of the southeastern United States. "We've had three days to get things together. We leave tomorrow for our fifth European tour: Ireland, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland. We'll be gone a couple of weeks, then we have two days at home and head out again."

We asked how he deals with the strain of touring constantly.

"Life on the road is hard for the first couple of days, then you fall into the rhythm of things and you could just do it forever. You never want to stop. Then you come home and...you never want that to stop either. I love my wife. I love my dog. I love my home. And when you come home, you're really, really home, you know? You're not dealing with your wife after a crappy day at work. You're home and you love it and you love her you never want to leave. And then the idea of going back out is hard. But after a couple of days you find the rhythm again."

"The things you find hard and frustrating are not what you thought they'd be. Waiting around all day. Eight hours in the van. Learning to get along with five other guys all day long, day after day. There's more to being successful in this business than just skills or talent. The music is always great. Hopefully that's a given. But can you learn to get along? To overlook petty differences and opinions. To understand that it's hard for everybody. In a group of five, it takes five people who can do that to make it work."

"Ultimately, life on the road is very rewarding so long as you keep your head on straight and you really love what you do."
