The Band of Heathens - the Old Man's Perspective

Seth's Father, Bruce Whitney, is the composer/musical director for Harlequin Productions. He has seen the band many times, so we asked him a few questions.

How would you describe the music of THE BAND OF HEATHENS?

Loose "roots" music, based in blues, country, rock - sometimes referred to as "swamp rock" - their music has been compared to that of The Band, Little Feat, etc.

How many times have you seen them perform?

At least a dozen.

What was your response the first time you saw them?

I was very impressed with the songwriting and the musical sensibilities of the band members. There are three main songwriters, all very good, all excellent writers, players and singers. The drums and bass are locked into each other, musically and emotionally, and the whole mix has a tight, yet loose and exciting chemistry.

What stands out in terms of the experience of seeing them perform? What makes them so successful live?

It always feels new. Songs I've heard many times feel fresh every time. The energy and communication among the musicians is fun, exciting, and ultimately very effective and satisfying. And even though they're all accomplished solo performers, they share the stage and never get in each other's way.

You're Seth's old man. Why should we believe you?

You shouldn't. In fact, you should go see them just on the off-chance you'll be able to expose me as a fraud. I dare you...

We asked Craig Foster, who has played keyboards/guitar/sax in numerous Harlequin shows, to share his thoughts as well.

"They have groove and soul to spare. Their songwriting is mature beyond their years. Today's Tennesean (Nashville paper) has a story of their nomination for best duo/group for the Americana Music Awards, which will be at the historic Ryman Auditorium. This is a big deal and they have earned it. BOH are loved both in Europe and the US. To use an overly used phrase, they are the real deal. I could go on and on."
