Art Rocks – Scarf It Up!
Hands On Felting Workshop with Janice Arnold, followed by Wine and Hors d'Oeuvres and Dessert!*
Felt is not a singular kind of fabric, rather an expanding universe of textiles, with limitless potential.
Janice Arnold has made it her life to know and understand Felt. She has researched and worked with nomadic tribes of Central Asia and Mongolia to learn the techniques of this ancient, practical and beautiful art. She has studied the high tech world of industrial felt. She has combined the two and developed new techniques to take the art of felting into unimaginable realms. Check out a video of Janice talking about her recent project, Chroma Passage.
Janice has worked with Julie Taymor/LA Opera, Cirque du Soleil and Wolfgang Puck to create magical worlds. Her recent installation, Palace Yurt, at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York shattered all records for attendance and was highlighted on the cover of the New York Times. To put it simply, Janice Arnold is a genius and a star.
Eight people will be invited to her studio to learn the art and craft of felting with a master. You'll create your own work of felt art in the process: either a felt rock or a scarf, it's up to you. It's fun. It's fascinating. And you'll get to hang out and drink wine and eat delectables with one of the most brilliant artists we know.
A note of explanation, however: the felting process takes time. Participants will design, lay up and wet their projects, but will not leave the event with a finished item. They will learn about the remainder of the process and receive the final product when completed.
“Arnold's passionate pursuit of new and innovative techniques, and her resulting work, expands our thinking about felt.”
Matilda McQuaid. Deputy Curatorial Director, Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum
