Creating Esther's world in Intimate Apparel through Scenic Design
Scenic Designer Linda Whitney had several challenges to overcome in designing this set. The play is set in a variety of locations and the character of Esther at times seamlessly moves from one world to the next. Linda's challenge was to design a set where each of the characters could have their own world, and all could be viewed by all of the audience.

The Scenic Design Process starts with research, and drafting of ground plans to see how all of the elements fit into the space. After several configurations, Linda settled on this arrangement then began drawing elevation sketches to see what all of the areas look like next to each other.

She then added color to the sketch to begin the process of doing paint elevations for the scenic artists to have a reference to use when painting the set.

She then gives this all over to our Technical Director Mark Bujeaud who then drafts the set using AutoCad. The detailed drawings he creates allows him to create construction drawings to build from as well as give us a relatively accurate picture of what the set will be like in 3-D. We can use the 3-D model to check sight lines from all of the seats in the house to make sure everyone can see the action as well as not see off stage into the wings.
