Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle & the Outer Critics Circle Awards Esther, a 35 year old single black seamstress in ragtime-era New York, stitches together a life making exquisite lingerie for wealthy socialites and women of ill- repute. Though proudly independent, Esther nonetheless struggles with loneliness. When she strikes up a correspondence with a laborer on the Panama Canal, her hopes for finding fulfilling companionship take an unexpected turn.
