2005:
Season Fourteen
![]() a satirical tale of honor, mercy, religion & politics by William Shakespeare The Duke of Vienna has left town unexpectedly leaving a young, inexperienced Puritan named Angelo in charge. Angelo has been given specific orders to enforce harsh laws against lechery and he sets about it with a righteous vengeance. All brothels in the suburbs are to be "plucked down." Young Claudio, whose lover has become pregnant, is sentenced to have his head cut off. When Claudio's sister, Isabella, pleads with Angelo for her brother's life, she awakens an unexpected passion in him that overwhelms his religious fervor. MEASURE FOR MEASURE is a remarkably intimate play that leaps violently between intense drama and refreshing comedy, ultimately mixing the two with astonishing elan. The play is rarely produced, and remains one of Shakespeare's most controversial works. We have found in it a black satire that kneads together religion, politics, sex and death to create a fascinating study of the difference between virtue and morality. Guest artists Summer Serafin and Rowan Brooks join Russ Holm, David Wright, Frank Lawler, John O'Keefe, Tim Hoban, Caitlin Finne, Heidi Rider, Dennis Rolly and Isaac Wulff Sponsored
